    Whither Facebook's IPO?

You would have to be living on another planet if you haven’t heard about the Facebook IPO by now. Deemed as one of the largest public offerings in the world, it has been a roller-coaster ride for what was once a college social network.

But while many amongst us in the Singapore digital fraternity had been looking forward to their IPO with baited breath, and at 100B dollars were expecting it to be larger than the Google IPO in 2004, there are some complications ahead before the deal is done.

I came across a couple of Javascript MVC frameworks and it stumped me. Why would anyone need a MVC framework for a language that is dealing mostly with the presentation layer on the web. So I did a little digging around and thought I could put together my findings as an introductory guide to Javascript MVC frameworks for server side developers.

Many of you would have seen some fantastic looking Facebook pages and thought that you'd like to have something wonderful as well but then got put off by the thought of figuring out just what FBML and all that rocket science stuff is all about. Although FBML will let you design just about anything for your business's Facebook fanpage, there still quite a lot you can do without any knowledge of code or rocket science.

    Vertical (Long) Facebook Profile Picture

One of the easiest things to do is to create a compelling Profile picture that say something about your business. Instead of a standard square image - we recommend you come up with a nice long image that truly reflects you brand and business.

Here are some great examples of Fanpage profile pictures that truly project your brand image.

How to Setup a Vertical Profile Picture

Let’s start off with some of the basic specs that Facebook provides. As of May 2010, Facebook recommends that profile pics should be a maximum of 180px wide, while height can vary as needed with a maximum height of 540px allowed.

To get started, go to your Facebook Fanpage and mouse-over on the Profile picture to reveal the "Change Picture" link. Click on it to reveal the options available and select "Upload Picture". Then simply select and upload a picture from your computer. Its that simple.

Size Restrictions for Facebook Profile Picture

That being said - we've had clients complain that they get the following error when trying to upload a vertical picture:

"Your picture is too tall or too wide.
Try to pick something closer to a square."

The trick here is to remember that Facebook requires your profile picture to be a maximum of 3 times longer than it is wide. So for example if you have a picture that is 150px wide - it can only have a maximum height of 450px.

That's all you'll need to do to start customising your business profile page on Facebook and stand out from the crowd.

Facebook launched their new Facebook Places just a forthnight ago and its been fun watching businesses figure out how to leverage this new feature to boost their sales and customer engagement. We felt this would great capability for businesses in Singapore to leverage considering we've got great Facebook penetration here.

    What is Facebook Places

A Facebook Place page -- once you've claimed it -- enables your customers to see a map from their iPhone or other mobile device that includes your business (Place) and a list of their Facebook friends who are currently checked in at your business. It also includes a Friend Activity stream comprised of other friends who have stopped in at the Place at any time in the past.

Here is the official guide from Facebook on setting up Places for your Singapore business, or you can reach out to us for Social Media consulting services if you need any help with it.

    What is Local Search?

Local search is all the buzz in the SEO circles online. As PPC prices have soared and getting to the first page on Google organic search gets more competitive, Local search is one of the most underutilized and least understood digital marketing strategies. Local search is a great way to get to the top of the search listing page in a cost effective way.

Local search is broadly defined as geo specific results returned by search engines like Google. These results usually appear laid over a map or part of a list of local businesses above the organic search results.

5 Tips for the Newbie Blogger

We’ve all heard how important it is to publish a blog to help drive traffic to our product or services website. Google loves blogs, as they provide a constant source of fresh content that Google can index. Each time you publish an article, you’re making it easier for your customers to find you through the content you create.

So you’ve decided what to write about and you’re ready to get started, but writing a blog is slightly different from writing for school or even for your local magazine. Numerous factors including our ever shrinking attention span, and your objective of increasing traffic and readers shape the way you should write your blog articles. Here’s the top 5 tips which will help you write more effective blog posts that will do wonders for your online marketing efforts.

    1) What’s in a Title?

Remarkable content starts with a remarkable Title for your post. In this age of 140 characters communications, the title is the hook that grabs your readers attention. Keep your titles clear and focussed on what you’ll be writing about. Well crafted Titles work well for for search engine optimization – so think of what someone might be searching for when devices titles. For example, instead of “Writing a Blog Post“, fine-tune the focus and use typical search terms like “How to” and “Top X“. Possible ideas would be “Top 10 tips for Blogs that Drive Traffic” or “A Beginner’s How-to Guide to Blog Writing“

    2) Start building Links

One of the reasons we maintain blogs is to be a source of fresh links to our product or services websites. Hence it’s important to identify keywords and start tagging them as hyperlinks to appropriate landing pages on our website. Besides driving traffic from your blog, its great practice for identifying and getting familiar with the important keywords for your business. For starters, make sure you add a link back to your website every time your product is mentioned in your blog.

    3) Pretty Pictures are Great

Always use Images and even videos if you can get your hands on a relevant one. A good blog post can become a great post with a good selection of Images to break up the text as well as add context to your article. You could use to use images or videos that help drive your point across, or simply add interesting, but completely irrelevant picture to your post – DoshDosh usually does a good job of this. Flickr.com is a great resource of Creative Commons images that you can use and credit.

    4) The KISS principle – Keep it Short Silly

Keeping it short is a good way to start, cos it just makes it easier to write a shorter post. Less words on paper means its easier and faster to put together and you know you won’t be rambling. Don’t worry you can always write longer posts once you’ve found your voice, but in the meantime, write short pieces to get as much practice as you can. Remember to also keep the individual paragraphs in your post short as well – limiting each to no more than 3 sentences.

    5) Who Needs WordPress anyway?

Getting started with blogging is challenging enough, you don’t need to want to worry about setting up the technical infrastructure for your blog. The popular blogging services like Blogger and WordPress.com are a good way to start, but I personally find the newer platforms like Posterous and Tumblr best. There’s a great deal of nice themes to pick from and publishing on these platforms is a breeze with email posting and web clipping bookmarklets. With Posterous, you also have the ability to automatically cross-post your blog article to various other social media platforms like a Facebook page, Twitter profile and more.

I think these 5 should put you in good stead as you get started. There’s more that can be done to improve the performance of you blog site – but in the interest of keeping it simple – we’ll stop here so you can get cracking.
